I gotta apologize. I went to the HUGE thrift shop we have last week but since we didn't intend to go there, I didn't even have my cell on me, much less my camera. It was so full of "The 80s called, they want their puke back." It hurt me with each step that I couldn't take pics. XD Maybe next time.

Here's some more stuff from the smaller store. Follow the trashy looking DivaStar.

Hopefully I've vaguely amused you for five to ten minutes. <3

Week 4, Day 3

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 11:24 PM
This run went much better than my day 2 did. I slowed my pace down a little and it helped me a lot. My last 5 minute run was the hardest because for the last 2 minutes I had a horrendous side stitch. I kept going even though I was in agony and I'm glad I didn't give up. I kept telling myself that if I stop now, I'll have to re-do the day and I don't want to re-do week 4 at all!!

Thanks for all the tips I got in my last post, they really helped me today.

Sock question

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 7:14 PM
I'm working on this pattern for Simple Socks for Ladies on Two Circular Needles.

I've turned the heel, picked up 16 gusset stitches with needle 1, but I am confused about the part that says:
"with end of same needle, transfer 10 heel sts to other end of Needle 2"

I'm not even sure where to start to ask about what I'm supposed to do. What stitches am I transferring exactly? The stitches I just picked up are gusset stitches not heel stitches so that doesn't seem right, but the stitches that are on the other end of needle 1 that are heel stitches wouldn't seem right either because I still need to knit across the instep and pick up gusset stitches on the other side.

I've tried just moving 10 stitches (the gusset stitches that I just picked up) to needle 2, but my stitch count is off when I do that and it just doesn't seem right.

Help! Hope I'm making sense.

Yarn Weight and Christmas Gifts

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Happy Black Friday to all the Americans out there!
I spent my day at Hobby Lobby and my local yarn store, where I got six skeins of alpaca/cotton bulky blend (normally $9.99 each), two skeins of a worsted Sara yarn, and a pack of cable needles for 25 dollars! I'm so glad I ventured out of my house on this crazy day.

Anyway, for Christmas I've decided to knit a bunch of hats, as I've become addicted to making hats.

I'll be using this Banana Republic Hat Knockoff pattern.

I had originally planned to make my sister a scarf in various shades of purple, but I ended up frogging that project. I would, however, like to use the yarn for that project to make her Christmas hat.

The only problem is that it's worsted weight, and I don't see a gauge listed for the pattern.

If I'm trying to turn worsted weight yarn into super bulky yarn, should I hold four strands together?

And, since I know lots of people are looking for fun, simple gifts to knit, I would like to share the Through the Loops One-Day Beret Recipe. You can knit it with any yarn & any needles. I'm making a couple of these for friends.

Thank you!

Ran into this show today, and it occurred to me that using his list would be a great idea if we do any traveling.

This is the list of the places he's done shows on:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/guys-diners-drive-ins-and-dives/index.html

"Join Guy Fieri as he visits classic "greasy spoon" spots, from a roadside shack in Tarpley, Texas to a Las Vegas sports bar with stellar stromboli."

I tweeted the following, in a discussion with someone else:

@jeamland mr landeryou has some history on wikipedia. (i did the sockpuppet investigation.)

Mr Landeryou saw fit to send me a threat for this:

Mr Gerard,

I am told you made reference to me in your musings on Twitter. I don't know
you, would rather not have to become familiar with who you are and what on
Earth possessed you to comment so freely about me or to edit Wikipedia to
say absurd things about me.

Your entitled to your opinion of me but I think it might be best for you to
discuss claims you make about me with me first. If you don't, I'll promise
to return the favour after an investigation into exactly what ails you. And
that really would be a waste of time for me and a very unpleasant outcome
for you, so I urge you to Twit more carefully in future.

Yours sincerely

Andrew Landeryou

I look forward to an exchange involving pie charts.

p.s.: if you don't want your months-long-running Wikipedia shenanigans remembered, it helps not to have done them. Oops, too late.

Lois McMaster-Bujold's reaction to finally seeing the newest Star Trek movie. She discusses plot points, so if you haven't seen it yet and care, don't read it.

I can see her points -- but I still liked it. Fluffy fun.

There's no trade-in program, you know.

My 5K race was yesterday and I did pretty good for a first timer. My time was 35 min 48 seconds. Not great for a runner, but amazing for me :-) Especially because during my last workout, I was only able to jog 8 min, then walk two. Repeat this twice more. So my goal when I started running the 5k yesterday was "at least make it a mile." And I did! I was almost at 2 miles before i had to walk a little. My best mile time was 11 min 33 seconds - a HUGE improvement over my last mile time (over 15 minutes). So much fun! There were about 1300 people running the 5K with me and - this kind of sounds bad when compared - but I came in around the 1000 mark. There was only about 300 people behind me but I'm just stoked I didn't come in dead last.

Anyway, I can't wait for my next 5k and thank you everyone for your support. For my next 5K, I'm seriously going to try to get my time around 30 min.

Cheeky

I feel pretty good so far this morning, despite allergy issues and two consecutive nights of shit for sleep due to kids, spouse, and dog. But if you nag me or ask me to do something other than what I want to do, I'll rip your head off.

I really want to grouse about the T-day meal yesterday, but I have a feeling it'd mean bad karma. So I'll just say next year it will be on my terms. If there is something I want to eat, then I will goddamn well make it, and not expect the in-laws to have it available.

It was established in a recent conversation with [info]baronalejandro that if my dressing had been on the set of American Pie that the kid wouldn't have even wanted a girlfriend.

Here's hoping to get some writing done today.

Robert's ceremony, complete with pictures

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 3:55 PM
As many know, my lord Robert haunts the Armour Archive, fighting the good fight for authentic kit, tournament styles and general passion for the 14th century.

As his friends started a thread to congratulate him, he posted a copy of the ceremony, and has included photos taken by Lady [info]racaire .
I must say she and Lord Vrenk are terrific event photographers: I didn't even see them, and yet they have some splendid pics of the ceremony!

Gerhardt and Judith are K&Q: court herald is [info]nusbacher on one side. Heralding the pelican ceremony is Sir Garrick von Kopke, OP, who did a great job of shepherding non-Latin speakers through several Latin responses and multiple regalia steps.

Robert's speakers were
Master Floris von Montfort from the Low Countries, on behalf of the Pelicans;
Master Etienne Fevre, on behalf of the Laurel circle, who spoke of his works in pewtering and his generosity of spirit in donating tokens for awards and events;
HG Sir Alaric of Bangor, for the Chivalry, who spoke of Robert's continuing work to support the fighting community in Thamesreach and ID with fight practices, armouring and training;
and HG Mistress Nerissa de Saye, Lady of the Rose, who spoke of his courtesy towards all ladies.

Scroll down the thread to find the account of the ceremony, with pictures.

No ceremony is exactly as is on paper, but this is awfully close. Of course, neither does it convey the solemnity, the lovely music, and the pleasure we took in seeing this ceremony, or the joy Gerhardt and Judith took in performing such a ceremony.

Nerissa also covered the story, including a nice pic of two of us,laughing, and again at dinner.

An unexpected invitation

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 3:24 PM
Today I got an unexpected invitation from a new-ish friend, which means that I will attend her birthday party soon. I like her and her husband a lot and they are also pagans so I look forward to an evening with interesting discussions. And nice food. I just have to find out what to give her as a birthday present.
